SIM Mike Read of Norwich, England competed at Correspondence Chess from 1978 until 2000. This website contains 120 of his best and most interesting games in chronological order, with at least one encounter from every tournament in which he ever took part. He was British Junior Champion in 1981 and 1982, became an International Master (IM) in 1995, and a Senior International Master (SIM) in 1999. He played 115 games for the Great Britain and England teams including playing for England in two Olympiads, two European Team Championships and two North Atlantic Teams Tournaments. The games given on this Web Site were annotated over the years 1980 to 2014, meaning that some notes were done soon after the games ended, while others were not analysed until many years after the event. Producing the annotations has been a labour of love for Mike, and his wish is for his work to be seen by as many people as possible. Therefore if anybody who visits this site happens to be a chess magazine editor, they have his permission to use any of the games given here free of charge in any chess publication. Mike has never possessed a computer, and so is grateful to the late John Charman for having typed out all of the annotations over the years, and to Ray Mayhew for setting up this site.
In early 2018 Mike compiled a book entitled 'My 120 Selected Correspondence Games' which contains all of the games given on this website with some additional analysis over 534 pages. He has subsequently followed this up with 'Triumph and Disaster (a second games collection)' which contains a further 60 of his games in 334 pages. After this he collaborated with his friend Colin Payne on 'The Vienna Gambit for the Club Player' , and finally he wrote '110 Instructive Chess Annotations' which was based around some of the best games by his many friends from in an around Norwich. All four of his books are available from Amazon online. Mike is not taking any royalties from the sale of any of these (Although Colin is taking a small one from the Vienna Gambit book), in order to keep the prices of them as competitive as possible.
